Frenectomy

Frenectomy

Minor procedure to release tight frenulum affecting the tongue or lip.

Overview

A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure in which a frenum is removed or released. A frenum is a small fold of tissue that connects parts of the mouth, such as the lips to the gums or the tongue to the floor of the mouth. When a frenum is unusually short or tight, it can restrict movement or contribute to problems with feeding, speech, or tooth spacing. The procedure is brief and is usually performed under local anesthesia.

Benefits

  • Improves tongue or lip movement
  • Can help with speech difficulties and feeding problems
  • Can help close a gap between the front teeth
  • Helps prevent gum recession caused by tissue pulling on the gums

What to Expect

The area is numbed and the tight tissue is released using a precise technique. The procedure usually takes only a few minutes. A stitch may be placed, and you can typically return to normal activities soon after. Mild soreness is common for a few days.

Aftercare Tips

Eat soft foods and avoid very hot, spicy, or crunchy items while the area heals. Keep your mouth clean with gentle brushing and any rinse recommended by your dentist. In some cases, simple stretching exercises are advised to maintain movement.
