Removes excess gum tissue to improve gum health and refine your smile line.
A gingivectomy is a surgical procedure that removes part of the gums (gingiva). It is used to treat conditions such as gum overgrowth and deep gum pockets, which can trap plaque and make cleaning difficult. It can also be performed for cosmetic reasons, such as reshaping the gumline to reduce a "gummy" smile. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia.
After numbing the area, the dentist carefully trims and reshapes the gum tissue. A protective dressing may be placed over the area. Some tenderness is normal for several days, and the gums typically heal within a couple of weeks. Follow-up visits ensure healing is on track.
Stick to soft, cool foods and avoid spicy or sharp foods that can irritate the area. Brush gently around the treated site and use any prescribed mouth rinse. Good daily cleaning is the best way to prevent the problem from returning.
